NAAF grant secures safe Buffalo holding facility for rancher partners
Fencing built on Ron Brownotter's land on Standing Rock Reservation, SD.
We are proud to announce that Tanka Fund has been awarded a grant from the Native American Agriculture Fund. This grant will be used to purchase essential equipment, which has helped create a new holding facility for Buffalo at Brownotter Ranch, owned by our rancher partner and board vice president, Ron Brownotter.
Key Highlights:
Grant-Funded Facility:
The grant enabled the construction of a critical holding facility to safely house Buffalo before processing.
The facility provides a secure space for the animals, ensuring their safety and care during the harvesting process.
Who Can Use the Facility:
Tanka Fund’s rancher partners who need a holding facility for animals that need to go to harvest.
Sacred Storm Buffalo, an Indigenous-owned workforce development enterprise dedicated to food sovereignty and cultural preservation. The enterprise is supported by a partnership between Tanka Fund, Wambli Ska Okolakiciye, Makoce Agriculture Development, and NDN Collective.
Collaboration and Efficiency:
Thanks to the hard work and efficient organization of the build team, the fence for the holding facility was completed in just one week.
Supporting Food Sovereignty:
This project is part of a larger mission to address the challenges faced by Native communities in accessing Buffalo processing services locally, with the goal of restoring and sustaining food sovereignty.
Words from Dawn Sherman, Tanka Fund Executive Director:
"This is true collaboration and passion to support food sovereignty and feeding the people. We aim to restore and revitalize these opportunities, ensuring a regenerative and sustainable future for our communities."
