Tanka Fund’s incentives program enrolls 12 ranchers in 2024

CHART: Breakout of the land practices among the ranchers in Tanka Fund’s beef and bison commodities program

Tanka Fund’s beef and bison commodities program, which provides incentives to Buffalo and cattle ranchers for long-term land management practices, just completed its first full year. Range ecologist Zintkala Eiring and range technician Janét Moore recently provided an overview of their 2024 progress:

Tanka Fund has enrolled 12 ranchers in the incentives program as of Jan. 13, 2025:

  • 11 ranchers are Buffalo caretakers

  • 1 is a cattle rancher

  • 9 ranchers represent historically underserved populations, including 4 veterans

  • The 12 ranchers represent 3,628 Buffalo in CO, TX, WY, MN, ND and SD, and 80 cattle in KS.

Six different Tribes are represented:

  • Modoc in Kansas

  • Fond Du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in Minnesota

  • Creek/Seminole and Lipan Apache in Texas

  • Oglala Lakota and Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in South Dakota

Funding for the program is made possible by a 5-year grant awarded to South Dakota State University (SDSU) in 2023 by the USDA.

Tanka Fund is a major partner in this award, as well as the National Bison Association (NBA), AgSpire, and Renovo Seeds.
