Tanka Fund works to expand ability to perform rangeland and agricultural monitoring
Summary
Tanka Fund is committed to enhancing soil and land health for its Buffalo rancher partners by providing advanced ecological monitoring services. Through the Climate Smart program, ranchers can gain access to critical data on soil health, water retention, carbon sequestration, and other vital ecological factors. This initiative supports sustainable land management, helping ranchers implement effective soil and climate strategies. Recently, two staff members were trained in certified rangeland and agricultural monitoring to better assist these efforts. While the program initially benefits Climate Smart program participants, Tanka Fund plans to eventually extend these monitoring tools to all its rancher partners, promoting widespread land restoration and sustainability.

Soil and land health are a big focus for Tanka Fund’s Buffalo rancher partners, who are constantly working to restore and sustainably manage their land for the benefit of their herds. The ability to access regular data on short- and long-term ecological conditions and trends helps ranchers with soil health and climate strategies, land monitoring plans and reports, and land and grazing planning.
“We are working to offer these capabilities as a permanent tool to all of our rancher partners,” said Dawn Sherman, executive director. “We are investing resources in learning how to provide these much-needed services.”
Two staff members from the Fund’s Climate Smart program were trained recently in certified rangeland and agricultural monitoring through SnapLands, a company that specializes in natural resource management, ranching business and land restoration.
The monitoring can help ranchers with:
Water retention and flood mitigation
Drought resilience and soil health
Forage quality and biological diversity
Maximizing long-term profit and production
Market differentiation
Verified land management impact accounting
Actionable land plans
Ecological monitoring training, accreditation, and land certifications
Carbon retention and carbon sequestration (IPCC)
“Our goal is for Tanka Fund’s rancher partners to have access to the most current data about the health of their own land,” Sherman said. “Many of our rancher partners also employ traditional methods of land and grass management, so this will help them monitor those efforts as well. The restoration of the Buffalo and the restoration of the prairie and grasslands they depend on is central to our mission.”
Sherman said ranchers who participate in the Climate Smart program will be the first to benefit from the monitoring, but Tanka Fund plans to roll out the service to all of its rancher partners.
