Our Rancher Partners: Virgil Two Eagle, Sr.

Virgil Two Eagle, Sr., of Black Feather Buffalo Project on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota is one of Tanka Fund’s longtime rancher partners. Virgil, who took over his uncle’s ranch in 2017, has about 73 Buffalo on the land, which spans more than 3,600 acres.

Virgil focuses on the connection between culture, land, and identity and emphasizes the importance of preserving traditions and legacies for future generations.

"Even though it’s hard, even though a lot of times the finances aren’t there to pay bills, I love what I do," he said. "We wouldn’t exist as a nation, as a people, if it wasn’t for the Buffalo Nation. They were our everything."

In the video above, Virgil talks about why he was inspired to become a Buffalo rancher for the next generation.

Virgil’s Black Feather Buffalo Project ranch also participates in Tanka Fund’s Climate Smart program, which provides incentives for sustainable land management practices.
