GP Ranch family harvest blends traditional foods with lessons in respectful harvesting
Our team was honored to participate in a family Buffalo harvest this month, hosted by our rancher partners, Theda and Chris Pogue of GP Ranch in Sulphur Springs, TX. With great reverence, we witnessed the careful and respectful care of the Buffalo, gaining a profound understanding of the practices involved in this sacred tradition. We received a complete and thoughtful education of the process.
The experience went beyond just the harvest. We learned about the Buffalo's story, his presence, and the deep significance of his contribution to the community. Harvesting an animal is a sacred responsibility — one that deepens our understanding of the Buffalo’s role and ensures that its life serves a meaningful purpose. This particular Buffalo will provide nourishment to a community member’s family and local veterans, offering both physical sustenance and spiritual nourishment.
We also had the opportunity to experience traditional Seminole foods that honored this practice — with dishes where Buffalo and hominy were the heart of the meal.
Harvesting is an essential part of caring for Buffalo, a practice that strengthens the connection between cultural tradition and sustainability. It plays a vital role in restoring the lands, lives, and economies of Native people — honoring the past while building a future where Buffalo once again thrive.
