Cultural harvest set for Pine Ridge Reservation community Oct. 15

Tanka Fund is co-sponsoring a cultural harvest with Makoce Agriculture Development Oct. 15 for the Pine Ridge Reservation community. Pte Kuwe/Thatháŋka Ktépi will be hosted by Oyáte Wóokiye and Toby Classic at the Makoce headquarters in Porcupine, SD. Tanka Fund rancher partner Edward Iron Cloud III, of Knife Chief Buffalo Nation, will be donating a Buffalo for the harvest.

“It’s healing for our community to eat in a traditional way,” Jeanne Eagle Bull, President of Oyáte Wóokiye, said. “Connection to the Buffalo enhances a sense of belonging and pride with our community members. We are on a healing journey of our people with this harvest.”

The ceremony follows the traditional Lakota way of life, connecting with the land, honoring ancestors, and living the traditions that sustain the Native community as a Tiwahe, or family.

The meat from the harvest will support the Toby Classic Skateboard Competition, wellness events, and nourish the Pine Ridge community — reinforcing our commitment to food sovereignty and well-being. In addition, the Buffalo hide will be used for the Lakota skate Tiwahe “family’s” winter count calendar.
