Knife Chief is a tiospaye (extended family) buffalo project on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation that is devoted to restoring the relationship between the Lakota and our Buffalo Relatives. Tanka Fund has provided two grants to Knife Chief totaling $30,000. These funds were critical to Knife Chief retaining its leased buffalo pasture, repairing their truck and providing a stipend to a caretaker to look after the buffalo. Last year, funds helped Knife Chief install a solar well for the buffalo and engage in strategic planning to ensure their future financial stability.

Knife Chief’s buffalo pasture is an area with no electricity. With a grant from Tanka Fund, the family installed a solar well to ensure their buffalo’s access to water.
